The 2015 conference was successfully conducted and attended by 45 delegates coming from various civil society organizations, donors and networks. It was held in Cebu City last July 28-30, 2015. The activity consisted of two major parts…the first one was a one-day field visit to Argao, Cebu which was hosted by Mag-uugmad Foundation, Inc. (MFI). The second part was a 2-day strategic planning workshop of the partners and other organizations including networks of NGOs.
The objectives of the conference are as follows:
- Draw-up future directions of DISOP in the Philippines through a strategic planning and brainstorming workshop;
- Determine development challenges (broad strokes) in the next 10 years;
- Productively share, informally interact, collaborate, exchange with other partners and NGOs to enhance knowledge-sharing about technology advancement, best practices and organizational development initiatives;
- Visit and interact with MFIs assisted beneficiaries, youth and people’s organizations implementing natural resource management project inside the watershed of Argao and Dalaguete, Cebu;
Participants who joined the field visit to Argao, Cebu were able to interact and visit the farms of Danny and Teresa Sarsaba (below picture) and the integrated vegetable farm of Jiepyboy Alberca. The visit concluded at the newly constructed Sustainable Upland Agriculture Resource Center for the Youth (SUARC-FY) in Barangay Tabayag, Argao, Cebu.
Another major part of the conference is the strategic planning workshop which lasted for 2 days. The planning was aimed to draw-up the current issues and realities which will eventually become a tool/basis for the future directions of the DISOP Program in the Philippines. The 2-day activity was facilitated by Mr. Orlando “Boy” Abelgas.
The planning updated and verified the 2012 strategic planning workshop. It identified trends and elements relevant to the current situational analysis which were not mentioned or included in the previous strategic planning. At the end of the activity, it was apparent that in the objective statement workshop of the participants, 1) capability building of POs and NGOs is common to all; 2) continuous linkages and networks with government offices and agencies; and 3) employability is implicit. Participants also identified a) DRR-CCA, b) Food security, and 3) sustainable livelihood diversification as among the three (3) elements relevant to the present times and not included in the 2012 strategic planning. After the synthesis of the workshop, the participants also confirmed that involvement of the youth is very important.
