Bert recalled how hard it was to live without a steady source of income. “At first, we were planting corn, camote, peanut, cassava and rice. It was never enough for the family. The kind of soil we had in Calubian is poor and with the crops we planted, it would take months to have income. So, I decided to sell the land and buy a motorcycle. I became a “habal-habal” driver for 10 years yet my income is still not sufficient to send my children to school.”
“In 2008, we made a very crucial decision to sell the motorcycle. We do not have land to till anymore so the family resorted to tenancy. My family met CLAD technician Tony Nierras because they included Barangay Tagharigue in their area of assistance. At first I hesitated to adopt the long-season vegetable production technology. Thanks to my wife.. she encouraged me to go on. So both of us studied the technology and became members of our cooperative. We both learned the technology by heart and we started planting different kinds of vegetables. From then on our harvest was tremendous! From the income of the vegetables, we were able to send our children not just in high school but also in college. We were also able to deposit savings in the cooperative.”
“I was very thankful to God and I am proud to be a farmer! Now, my family was able to acquire back the land that we sold before. We develop it into vegetable production area for ampalaya and rice. Aside from that we were able to purchase a motorcycle which we used to deliver vegetables to our customers. Now, we are equip with farm implements necessary in expanding the farm for vegetables and rice. Because of the expansion of my farm, I employed three (3) workers to maintain the farm.
